How to Calculate Square Footage

Step-by-step guide for accurate measurements

1. Measure

Measure the length and width of your space using a tape measure. For irregular shapes, break them into simple rectangles.

2. Calculate

Multiply length × width for rectangles. For triangles: (base × height) ÷ 2. For circles: π × (diameter ÷ 2)²

3. Add Areas

For L-shaped or complex areas, calculate each section separately and add the results together.

4. Add Waste

Add 10% extra for materials to account for cuts, waste, and future repairs. Complex patterns may need 15-20%.

Quick reference for different shapes

ShapeFormulaExample
RectangleLength × Width12 ft × 10 ft = 120 sq ft
L-ShapeArea 1 + Area 2(12×10) + (6×5) = 150 sq ft
Triangle(Base × Height) ÷ 2(10 × 8) ÷ 2 = 40 sq ft
Circleπ × (Diameter ÷ 2)²π × (10 ÷ 2)² = 78.54 sq ft
